Fall 2021 Typographic Exercise

Project: Esperanto, named after the international auxiliary language, is a botanical magazine designed to educate the public on plant medicinal properties and uses. I was responsible for the complete creation of this magazine.

Challenge: Creating Esperanto involved solving numerous small tasks to achieve a successful final product. These tasks included initial research, wordmark design, grid development, typesetting, data collection, and more.

Final Wordmark

With a finished wordmark and a cohesive typographic system in place, Esperanto was ready to begin typesetting potential spreads for the magazine.

The most challenging part of this project was designing the cover. The issue was creating a cover that adequately represented the spreads inside the magazine. The initial covers failed to convey what readers could expect from Esperanto.

Final Spreads

After weeks of iterating on typesetting spreads and covers for Esperanto and incorporating feedback from each critique, I arrived at a final product that met the challenge of solving numerous small tasks to create a successful magazine.
